Turnbutton Fasteners Fitting Guide

Turnbutton fasteners, also known as turnbuckle fasteners, twist fasteners or common sense fasteners, are a traditional and reliable fastening system used on boat covers, canopies, tonneau covers, classic cars, awnings and outdoor fabrics.

They work by passing the turnbutton through an eyelet in the fabric and then twisting the head to lock the cover securely in place.

How Turnbutton Fasteners Work

A turnbutton fastener is made up of a twist button, eyelet and backing washer. The eyelet is fitted into the fabric, while the turnbutton is fixed to the boat, frame, panel or mounting surface.

  • Turnbutton – the rotating part that locks the fabric in place.
  • Eyelet – fitted into the cover or canvas.
  • Washer – supports the eyelet
  • Base / Stud – fixed to the mounting surface depending on the style used.

How to Fit Turnbutton Fasteners

1. Mark the Position

Place your cover in the correct position and mark where the turnbutton fastener needs to sit.

2. Fit the Turnbutton Base

Screw or rivet the turnbutton to the boat, canopy frame, vehicle body or panel. Make sure it is positioned straight and secure.

3. Mark the Fabric Opening

Pull the cover into position over the turnbutton and mark where the eyelet needs to be fitted.

4. Punch or Cut the Hole

Create the correct hole in the fabric for the eyelet. A clean hole will help the eyelet sit neatly and prevent damage to the material.

5. Fit the Eyelet and Washer

Place the eyelet through the fabric and fit the washer on the reverse side. Set the eyelet using the correct tool.

6. Test the Fastener

Push the eyelet over the turnbutton and twist the button to lock it in place. The cover should be held securely without excessive strain.
