Snap Fastener Components
A standard DOT® snap fastener set is made up of four main parts: cap, socket, stud and post. Knowing which part is which makes fitting much easier.

- Cap – the visible outer part of the fastener, available with a 4mm or 6mm post.
- Socket – the female part that snaps onto the stud.
- Stud – the male part that the socket clips onto.
- Post – fitted through the material and set with the correct tool.
How to Fit DOT® Snap Fasteners
1. Mark the Position
Place your cover, canopy or fabric in the correct position and mark where the fastener needs to be fitted.
2. Punch a Clean Hole
Use the correct hole punch or fitting tool to create a clean hole through the material. A clean hole helps the fastener set neatly and securely.
3. Fit the Cap and Socket
Insert the cap through the fabric, place the socket over the post and set it using the correct snap fastener setting tool.
4. Fit the Stud and Post
Fit the stud and post to the opposite side of the material, again using the correct setting tool. Once fitted, the socket should snap firmly onto the stud.
5. Test the Fastener
Press the two halves together until they click. The fastener should feel secure, but still release cleanly when pulled apart.
Nickel Plated Brass vs Stainless Steel
Nickel Plated Brass DOT® Snap Fasteners
Nickel plated brass is the most common choice for boat covers, canopies, upholstery and general outdoor fabric work.
Pros
- Excellent snap action
- Good corrosion resistance
- Easier to set than stainless steel
- More cost effective
- Popular choice for marine covers and upholstery
Cons
- Nickel plating can wear over time
- Not as corrosion resistant as stainless steel
- May not last as long in harsh saltwater environments
Stainless Steel DOT® Snap Fasteners
Stainless steel is the premium option for harsh marine, coastal and outdoor environments where corrosion resistance is especially important.
Pros
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Ideal for marine and coastal use
- Long-lasting appearance
- Premium option for demanding environments
Cons
- More expensive than nickel plated brass
- Harder material can be slightly more difficult to fit
- Snap action can feel firmer
Which Post Length Do I Need?
DOT® snap fastener caps are commonly available with either a 4mm or 6mm post. The correct size depends on the thickness of your material.
- 4mm post – suitable for thinner canvas, vinyl and fabric.
- 6mm post – better for thicker or layered materials.
