Lift the dot info and fitting
Lift-the-Dot® Fastener Fitting Guide
Lift-the-Dot® fasteners are one of the most secure canopy fasteners available. Unlike standard press studs, they can only be released from one specific side, making them ideal for boat covers, sprayhoods, tonneau covers, vehicle covers, awnings and outdoor canvas applications.

Lift-the-Dot Components Explained
A typical Lift-the-Dot fastening system consists of:
Socket
The locking component fitted into the fabric.
Stud
The part that the socket locks onto.
The mounting base fixed to the boat, vehicle, frame or structure.
Stud bases are available in several styles, including:
- 2-hole base studs
- 1-hole base studs
- Wood screw studs
- Machine screw studs
- Threaded studs with nuts
Tools Required
- Lift-the-Dot cutting tool
- Hammer
- Marker pen
- Screwdriver or drill, depending on stud type
The Lift-the-Dot cutting tool is designed to create the correct opening for the socket assembly. This gives a neater, stronger and more professional installation than cutting the hole by hand.
Step 1 - Install the Stud
Install the stud onto the boat, vehicle, cover frame or mounting surface first. Make sure it is securely fixed before positioning the fabric.
Step 2 - Position the Fabric
Lay the canvas or cover in its final position. Pull the material snugly, but do not overstretch it. Mark the exact centre position of each stud.
Step 3 - Cut the Fabric
Place the Lift-the-Dot cutting tool over the marked position. Using a hammer, tap the tool firmly to create the correct opening for the socket assembly.
Step 4 - Fit the Eyelet and Socket
Insert the eyelet through the fabric opening. Place the Lift-the-Dot socket into position and secure it using the correct backing plate or washer.
Important: Socket Direction
Lift-the-Dot fasteners only release from one side. The side marked “Lift the Dot” should face the direction you want to lift from.
Step 5 - Test the Fastener
Press the socket firmly onto the stud until it locks into place. Check that the fastener holds securely and releases only from the marked side.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Fitting the socket the wrong way round
- Overstretching the fabric before marking
- Using the wrong stud type for the surface
- Cutting the hole by hand instead of using the correct tool
