DOT® Stainless Steel Rolled Rim Grommets Fitting Guide
DOT® Rolled Rim Grommets are the premium choice for reinforcing holes in boat covers, canopies, tarpaulins, awnings, outdoor fabrics and industrial applications.
Unlike many standard grommets, genuine DOT® rolled rim grommets feature a rolled edge design that provides exceptional strength, improved appearance and superior resistance to pull-out under load.
At J Clarke Marine, we supply genuine DOT® stainless steel rolled rim grommets together with our precision German-manufactured setting tools, designed specifically to produce professional-quality results every time.

What is a Rolled Rim Grommet?
A rolled rim grommet consists of two parts:
- Grommet – the front section fitted through the material.
- Washer – fitted to the reverse side to secure the installation.
When installed correctly, the rolled rim design creates a strong reinforced hole that resists tearing and provides a neat, professional finish.
The rolled edge helps spread loads more evenly around the hole, making rolled rim grommets significantly stronger than many standard plain grommets.
How to Fit DOT® Rolled Rim Grommets
1. Mark the Position
Mark the exact location where the grommet is required.
2. Cut the Hole
Using the correct hole cutter, create a clean hole through the material.
A clean, accurately sized hole is essential for achieving a professional finish and maximum holding strength.
3. Insert the Grommet
Insert the grommet through the hole from the front side of the material.
4. Position the Washer
Place the matching washer onto the protruding barrel from the rear side of the material.
5. Set Using the Bespoke German Tooling
Position the assembly within the German-manufactured DOT® setting dies and apply pressure.
The specially designed tooling rolls the barrel neatly over the washer, creating a secure and professional installation.
6. Inspect the Finished Grommet
The finished grommet should be evenly rolled with no sharp edges and should sit securely within the material.
Why We Use German-Manufactured Bespoke Tooling
Many low-cost grommet setting tools simply crush the barrel into the washer. While this may hold initially, it can result in inconsistent installations and reduced strength.
Our bespoke German-manufactured tooling has been specifically engineered for DOT® rolled rim grommets and creates a precise rolled finish that closely matches factory-installed grommets.
